For the Umpteenth Time, Illegal Aliens Are Not ‘In the Shadows,” but Much in the Public Displaying Contempt for Law

Published on December 11th, 2014

Illegal immigrants are still, according to reporters who write sympathetically about them, advocates who lobby on their behalf and politicians who approve of their unlawful presence, “in the shadows.”

Nothing could be further from the truth, of course, as proven by the most recent example of aliens protesting at the December 2 House Judiciary Committee hearing on President Obama’s executive action.

Not (!) “In the Shadows”

Dozens of illegal immigrants, chanting “Si, se puede” and demanding to know why the federal government was “breaking up families,” interrupted Chairman Bob Goodlatte and senior ranking member John Conyers as they tried to begin the proceedings. One man screamed that he had been in the U.S. for 30 years! Watch the hearing here.

What a sad but telling comment on U.S. immigration law nonenforcement. An alien can not only avoid deportation for three decades, but has no compunction about showing up in Congress where, even though he’s among the nation’s most powerful and influential lawmakers, he knows he won’t be detained. Goodlatte reprimanded the unruly crowd by threatening that the Capitol police would remove them. In nations that respect their immigration laws, such a public display of disrespect would not be tolerated and would likely end up with the perpetrators in jail.

Among illegal immigrants, few if any live “in the shadows.” Many hold jobs; others have access to health care, and some engage in mid-day civil disobedience directly outside of the White House.

If there’s one thing illegal immigrants aren’t, it’s “in the shadows.” During the last several years, they have become increasingly visible and, with deportations at the lowest level since 1973, are unafraid to be seen anywhere
