Americans may eventually find a way to live without oil. Water is another story. Optimistic Americans believe we will eventually replace our dependence on oil with alternative fuels. There is no alternative for water. It is the one resource that humans can’t live without for more than a few days.

As America’s population races from the current 300 million to a projected 400 million in the next 30 years, progressive thinkers are confronted with a debate among themselves – and others – as to our nation’s capacity to absorb domestic population growth and growth due almost entirely to immigration. What price will we pay in terms of the environment? What will be the impact on resources from water to energy? What additional challenges will be created by this growth? What is our responsibility to future generations?

As rising fuel prices put renewed pressure on family budgets, many worry price increases will continue. Some recall the mile-long gas lines years ago when Americans had to compete for a share of dwindling energy supplies. With America's population at a record 300 million today, supplies are again tight in spite of record high prices. And the U.S. Census Bureau projects that another 110 million people will be added to our population between 2000 and 2040. What will happen to energy prices then?

A majority of Americans agree that runaway population growth threatens their quality of life. But with the U.S. Census projections indicating our population will explode from 300 million to 400 million in thirty years and 600 million by 2100, quality of life for future generations will be gone unless we take action today.
