As Crimes against Americans Mount, Excuses Abound for Nonenforcement

Published on August 12th, 2015

Six weeks have passed since Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez shot and killed Kate Steinle. Nightly news viewers are well familiar with the details: Lopez-Sanchez is a five-time deported, seven-time convicted felon who executed 32-year-old Steinle in sanctuary city San Francisco.

But Kate’s senseless, preventable death has already faded from the news, displaced by the Iran nuclear deal, the GOP debate, and endless hours dedicated to the travails of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. To be sure, the Senate held a hearing on sanctuary cities, and the House passed a bill to defund them. But since President Obama has vowed to veto the bill if it should reach his desk, sanctuary cities will continue to ignore federal immigration law.

Sadly, Americans may have become immune to the murders and mayhem illegal aliens commit. While most people instantly recognize Kate’s name, another victim, Angelica Martinez, killed within 24 hours of Steinle’s murder is virtually unknown. Her four-time deported husband Juan Francisco De Luna Vasquez beat Martinez on the head with a hammer until she was dead.

Police in Laredo, Texas, had previous violent encounters with the family, but never reported Vasquez’s illegal presence to Border Patrol because, according to Laredo Police Department representative Joe Baeza, it “would wedge a bigger divide between the citizenry that we serve….” Laredo KGNS television elaborated on Baeza’s statement and reported that he said cooperating with federal immigration officials on domestic violence cases involving aliens could have a “chilling effect” on the community. Laredo’s population is 96 percent Hispanic.

The “chilling effect” argument suggests that illegal aliens are afraid to cooperate with law enforcement because they fear that they’ll be targeted for deportation. But studies show that noncooperation is more likely the result of aliens’ poor language skills or cultural issues. In Mexico, the police are rarely summoned because they’re considered untrustworthy. In the U.S., not a single documented case exists where an illegal immigrant who reported a crime was deported.

As excuses mount for not turning over violent foreign national offenders to immigration officials, so do capital crimes committed against American citizens.

Please sign the CAPS petition here that will be delivered to Congressional leaders demanding that they take action to stop the 276 sanctuary cities that release criminal aliens into the public.
