The American Lung Association’s Latest Air Pollution Report Is Out… And It’s Bad News For California

Published on April 28th, 2018

Despite many attempts by California lawmakers to curb air pollution levels in the Golden State, according to a new report by the American Lung Association, (ALA) California still has eight out of the 10 worst cities in America for air pollution. The "State of the Air" report released annually by the ALA analyzes data from official air quality monitors and documents unhealthful levels of air pollution.

The top 10 most polluted cities according to the American Lung Associaton:

#1: Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA

#2: Bakersfield, CA

#3: Visalia-Porterville-Hanford, CA

#4: Fresno-Madera, CA

#5: Sacramento-Roseville, CA

#6: San Diego-Carlsbad, CA

#7: Modesto-Merced, CA

#8: Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ

#9: Redding-Red Bluff, CA

A piece in USA Today describes just how bad the situation is in California.

The Los Angeles/Long Beach area took the dubious distinction of being the nation's most ozone-polluted city as it has for nearly the entire 19-year history of the report.

Overall, the report said about 133 million Americans — more than four of 10 — live with unhealthful levels of air pollution, placing them at risk for premature death and other serious health effects such as lung cancer, asthma attacks, cardiovascular damage and developmental and reproductive harm.

"We still have a lot to do in this country to clean up air pollution," said Lyndsay Moseley Alexander, director of the Association's Healthy Air Campaign.

The report looked at pollution levels from 2014 to 2016. Ozone pollution was worse overall in this report than it was in last year's report.

Bakersfield, Calif., was in second place for ozone pollution. Other California cities on the list include Fresno, Sacramento and San Diego. The only non-California metro areas in the top 10 list were Phoenix and New York City.

While environmental regulations may help curb air pollution, Californians needs to wake up to the reality of what mass immigration has done to their state. At 40 million people, California is the most populous state. Legal and illegal immigration have fueled a housing crisis, water shortage, and nonstop urban development.

How can we tackle air pollution in California without addressing its root cause?
