Bill Maher Advocates for Small Families

Published on August 15th, 2011

While there’s lots of buzzing about last Thursday’s Republican presidential debate in Iowa, I’m still thinking (and chuckling) about the June Republican debate in New Hampshire – and the response to it from political commentator and comedian Bill Maher.

Starting with moderator John King’s opening asking the candidates to say something about themselves, Maher then observed, "It moved into who has made more babies.

"Michele Bachmann opened the betting with five; Mitt Romney matched her five, and Rick Santorum bested them both with seven.

"Sadly, Newt Gingrich could only muster up two children – loser!"

Maher continued, "When did the size of your brood become so important to presidential qualifications?"

With a lot more funny stuff in between, Maher wrapped with the serious, "We live on a sick and tired planet – the human race is now consuming every year what it takes 1.3 years to restore. How is having a large family a badge of honor?

"If we want to prevent living in a nightmare world where people are fighting over water and god knows what else, we have to discourage indiscriminate spawning, starting with calling out these nauseating freaks, the Duggars, who have 19 children … and their television show is called ‘19 Kids and Counting.’ If they had 19 cats, it would be called ‘Hoarders,’" concluded Maher.

In a world closing in on a population of 7 billion people, I’m glad Maher "gets" the importance of having small families for those who choose to have families. Now we can only hope he sees the light and makes the linkage between overpopulation and mass unchecked illegal immigration.
