Relying on one of the most hackneyed arguments to defend amnesty, President Obama recently said that Americans should support his immigration executive action, heed the Bible – which he misquoted – and treat the strangers among us kindly. See the video of Obama using Christmas as an excuse for Americans to back his unconstitutional amnesty here.

Throughout the decades-old, bitter dispute about whether the U.S. should give amnesty to aliens, advocates have often urged that we must, as they claim the Bible suggests, love the sojourner. But as is frequently the case, the pro-immigration lobby relies on partial truths. The words “immigrant” and “immigration” don’t appear in the Bible and “sojourner” refers to a transient who intended to return home, not someone who seeks to relocate permanently to another nation.

President Obama and his family begin their 17-day Hawaiian vacation.

In a conversation I once had with an ordained United Methodist elder and a Duke Divinity School graduate, he told me that: “I would emphasize again and again that ‘sojourner’ was a specific word for temporary wanderer, not meant to include immigrants. And the context of Biblical times, when ‘sojourner’ was used, was very different than today’s context. It’s appropriate that the citizens of a nation exercise oversight and stewardship of their national resources – and that includes their border.”

When Obama says Americans should care for sojourners, aka aliens, he means give them jobs that Americans need, provide them with health insurance even though citizens go without, and grant federal benefits the government can’t afford to pay out.

If only Obama could muster the same generous Christmas spirit toward the 7 million Americans who want a full-time job but can’t find one, the 47 million who live below the poverty line – 13 million more than when he took office in 2009 – or the 2.5 million homeless American children.

Obama simply doesn’t care about struggling Americans. The president talks about creating jobs and ending poverty. But when it comes to taking action, Obama is all about providing for illegal immigrants and pandering to their lobby. Americans are left out in the Christmas cold.

Today Obama is vacationing luxuriously in Hawaii, far, far away from Americans not having a Merry Christmas. But when Obama returns to the White House in January, he’ll pick up where he left off – working hard to make sure his unpopular executive amnesty that benefits aliens but hurts Americans moves forward.
