Feds Funding Deported Illegal Immigrants Living Back Home

Published on January 10th, 2017

For Americans who understandably can’t make heads or tails out of U.S. immigration policy, here’s another head scratcher. The United States is doling out $50,000 intended to help out deported Salvadorian aliens living back home in El Salvador.

Tens of thousands of homeless U.S. vets should rank higher for assistance than deported illegal aliens.

Included in Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-KY) annual Waste Report’s Airing of Grievances (page 43), the entitlement program is administered by the nonprofit Institute of Salvadorian Migrants through the U.S. taxpayer-supported Inter-American Foundation funds.

To be sure, the gesture is a noble one and may have some merit, especially if it cuts illegal immigration. The U.S. has had poor success when it sends money to Central America with the goal of helping keep would-be aliens at home. In 2014, the Obama administration allocated $250 million to Central America allegedly to help return aliens home and create youth programs in their home countries. The idea was a dismal failure; more than two years later, the border surge is on pace to set a new record with no significant step-up in removal proceedings.

If the federal government has extra cash to hand out, the tens of thousands of homeless U.S. vets, and not the foreign nationals who broke American laws, should be at the top of any list to get financial assistance.

As Sen. Paul said when he shared his report with Congress, “So, if you break the rules and get deported, we’ll help you start a business back in your home country. How absurd.”
