Flow of Minor Illegal Aliens Continues, ‘NIMBY’ Emerges from Supporters

Published on July 5th, 2014

The crisis along America’s southwest border continues to be the lead story for news organizations across the United States and beyond. For weeks, thousands of unaccompanied minor illegal aliens have flooded across U.S. borders in record numbers, often seeking Border Patrol agents to whom they surrender.

For decades, illegal aliens from virtually every country have sought entry into the U.S. Several years ago, tongue in cheek, I wrote an updated version of the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem, “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere,” focused on this paragraph of the famed poem:

He said to his friend, “If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light, –
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm.”

The point I had made was that Paul Revere and his fellow patriots had it easy. With just three lanterns, they could effectively signal how the British were coming. I noted that today, with the many ways that illegal aliens enter the U.S., it would require so many lanterns that they would have needed to strip the local hardware store shelves bare of lanterns and would have likely ended up setting the Old North Church on fire!

We are, indeed, a country of 50 border states.

However, it is undeniable that the U.S./Mexican border does account for a huge number of illegal aliens entering our country daily. The difference now is that we have never seen huge numbers of illegal aliens seeking out Border Patrol agents. They certainly don’t do this because they want to be returned to their home countries, but because they have come to expect that the agents will process them and provide them with comforts and an opportunity to remain in the U.S.

No administration has been more welcoming to immigration law violators, making it clear that young aliens will not be sent home. Congress may have voted down the DREAM Act, but the administration has acted unilaterally to promulgate regulations under the claimed exercise of “Prosecutorial Discretion” to provide hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens with official identity documents and lawful status. As I’ve said before, what the president referred to as “prosecutorial discretion” was, in reality, an exercise in prosecutorial deception.

In Congress, the majority of Democrats stood behind the president’s wrong-headed policies and voted for Comprehensive Immigration Reform to ultimately provide unknown millions of illegal aliens with lawful status in the U.S. and even a pathway to citizenship.

On the local level, mayors and some governors declared their cities and states to be “Sanctuaries” for illegal aliens, laying out yet another welcome mat for aliens who violated our borders and our laws which are America’s first and last line of defense against international terrorists, transnational criminals (including drug cartel members), aliens with dangerous communicable diseases and aliens who would displace Americans in the workforce.

The Republicans don’t, as a party, get a pass either. Republican leaders in both the House and Senate have openly advocated for millions of illegal aliens to remain in the U.S. and receive lawful status, but without a pathway to citizenship. They claim that since we cannot deport all of the illegal aliens we should let them all stay! Of course, by this fatally flawed “reasoning,” the case for a massive amnesty program gets stronger with the entry of every single additional illegal alien.

But now, as the saying goes, “The chickens have come home to roost” – in the towns and cities of the advocates for Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

Congressman Steve Israel, who “represents” New York’s 3rd Congressional District, has made his position on immigration reform crystal clear, proclaiming unflagging support for the DREAM Act, Comprehensive Immigration Reform and all of these other programs to reward those who violate our borders and our laws. Incredibly, he now is complaining loudly about DHS plans to ship those unaccompanied minor illegal aliens to the community he represents on Long Island.

In effect, Israel and his colleagues sent out the invitations and are now upset that company is coming. Here is some free advice to Steve and his colleagues in Washington, “Be careful what you wish for!”
