On Independence Day, DHS Says Don’t Worry, We Have Your Back

Published on July 3rd, 2015

Recent Independence Day celebrations have a new, frightening post- 9/11 twist to them. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Homeland Security and local law enforcement agencies now routinely warn Americans to be on high alert for possible July 4 terrorist attacks. The terrorists, we’re told, could strike anywhere, anytime.

The alerts are hedged with disclaimers that the FBI has no specific knowledge of any plots against America, but, nevertheless, extreme caution is advised for all. As DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson unconvincingly said: “We will also adjust security measures, seen and unseen, as necessary to protect the American people. We continue to encourage all Americans to attend public events and celebrate this country during this summer season, but always remain vigilant.”

A more seasoned, less politically correct terrorism analyst than Johnson, former Navy Seal Rob O’Neill, agrees that Americans should be on guard. O’Neill blames the insecure southern border and the steady flow of Iraqi refugees that make it possible for America to be so vulnerable. Based on nonexistent border security, O’Neill concluded that, “Yeah, they’re [the terrorists] going to hit us here.” See the O’Neill interview here.

Johnson’s cold-comfort insistence that DHS will do everything necessary to shield Americans doesn’t include things that would really make a difference – securing the border, turning back unidentified, uninspected Central American border surgers and eliminating the flow of Middle Eastern refugees, including those from the avowed American-hating nations of Iraq, Syria and Somalia. Keeping people who could pose life-threatening dangers out of America is easier than controlling their movements once they land on United States soil.

This Independence Day weekend may be a good time for Americans to take off their headsets and put away their electronic devices to watch what’s going on around them. According to O’Neill, Americans should be worried about a terrorist attack “every day.”
