Legal Status for Central America Aliens = Work Permits, Continued American Worker Displacement

Published on August 13th, 2014

Central American alien advocates have advanced near-hysterical levels of rhetoric to support their case. Last month, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley said that, if the administration sent the Central Americans home, they would face “certain death” even though there’s little if any tangible evidence that would be their fate.

Then, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi one-upped O’Malley when she compared the aliens to the baby Jesus and Moses. As Pelosi sees it, Jesus was a refugee from violence; Moses, too. See Pelosi explain her tortured logic here.

Let’s stick to what we know. And what we know is that if the Obama administration allows thousands of poor, under-educated, unskilled, mostly young Central American illegal immigrants to remain, they won’t write another set of Ten Commandments. Instead, they’ll get work permits and enter the slack labor market to compete with the most vulnerable Americans who have the same socio-economic profile. Minorities have suffered disproportionately in the employment market since 2009.

Under Obama, Americans have steadily lost ground to foreign-born workers. According to an analysis of the Current Population Survey of households that includes demographic data, during the last five years, foreign-born employment rose by 2.3 million, or 10.6 percent, while native-born American employment rose by 1.8 million, or 1.5 percent.

The disturbing American worker displacement trend is the logical outcome of adding nearly one million legal immigrants each year regardless of economic conditions or population growth, and would likely accelerate if Central Americans, many of them working age, stay in the U.S.
