The Time Has Come to Stop Profiling American Voters

Published on February 5th, 2012

This past Monday evening, January 31st, Fox News' Greta Van Susteren aired a video of a brief interview that had been conducted with Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, in which he was asked about his thoughts about his impending trip to Nevada and how he would fare against Mitt Romney in that state.  He was asked about the impact of the “Mormon vote” in Nevada and about a number of other issues.  Former Speaker Gingrich began by saying:

“First of all I don't think Mormons automatically vote monolithically…”

If former House Speaker Newt Gingrich truly believes that Mormons “don’t automatically vote monolithically” then why would he or anyone else expect any other ethnic or religious group would “vote monolithically?”

I believe that Newt Gingrich was correct- there is no monolithic vote where our citizens are concerned. While some voters will vote for someone simply because they are of the same religion or ethnicity as a candidate, or find some other such perceived common ground, it is wrong to simply lump American citizens into groups based on race, religion or ethnicity in an effort to predict how they will vote or how a candidate must take a position on a controversial issue in order to gain the vote of that group of voters.

To simply look at a person and predict how that person will vote based simply on his (her) race, religion or ethnicity is a form of profiling of the worst kind.

By breaking our citizenry into these groups, we divide our nation and pit Americans against one another.

We have permitted politicians and journalists to hyphenate our nation; this is not only wrong-headed but dangerous.  As President Abraham Lincoln famously stated, "A house divided against itself cannot stand."

Unfortunately, there are some folks who will assume positions about issues based on what they hear on the television or radio and may even begin to come to believe that they should take a particular position because it is all but expected that they will take certain positions.  This is one of the risks of having people who are unable to think for themselves or develop critical thinking skills.

It is absurd to believe that lawful immigrants and naturalized citizens would welcome open borders and pathways to citizenship for illegal aliens who, rather than play by the rules and abide by the laws that lawful immigrants adhered to in entering our country, have shown utter contempt for our laws and our nation’s sovereignty by running our nation's borders, stealing other people's identities and taking the jobs American workers desperately need.

The purpose of our nation’s immigration laws is to protect our nation and our citizens and lawful immigrants from aliens whose presence in our country would be problematic.  Our immigration laws are supposed to prevent the entry of aliens who might take the jobs or even the lives of our citizens. Those laws are not about race, religion or ethnicity but about differentiating what it is to be a lawfully admitted nonimmigrant, lawfully admitted immigrant or United States citizen from an illegal alien.

In an era in which our citizens and lawful immigrants of every race religion and ethnicity faces the threat of violence perpetrated by violent transnational gang members and terrorists and the loss of jobs to our nation’s economic crisis and unfair competition for remaining jobs by foreign workers, our nation’s immigration laws have never been more important for our nation or our citizens!  In point of fact, most Americans of all races, religions and ethnicities have come to understand how important our nation’s borders and immigration laws are!

In fact, the results of the Florida GOP Primary, Mitt Romney won handily even though his approach to the immigration crisis is to call for illegal aliens to be convinced to self-deport while Newt Gingrich has taken a far softer approach on the immigration crisis talking about how we should not seek to deport grandmothers and grandfathers.  To put this in context, Florida has a large Hispanic population- primarily with origins that can be traced to Cuba.

While the open borders anarchists and many politicians may claim that a candidate who wants to capture the “Latino Vote” must advocate pathways to lawful status for illegal aliens and the DREAM Act, it would certainly appear that in reality the majority of Americans have come to understand the importance of secure borders and immigration laws that are actually enforced!  In my travels I have encountered many lawful immigrants and naturalized United States citizens who resent illegal aliens receiving immigration benefits when they and their family members had followed the letter of the law as well as the spirit of the law in legally immigrating to the United States.

There is, however, one group of people that should be “pandered” to by the politicians and that group consists of all of our citizens irrespective of race, religion or ethnicity or even political affiliations.  This was precisely what President Lincoln had in mind when he referred to our nation's government as being “Of the people, by the people and for the people!”
