CAPS eNews and Action

Here’s the latest eNews to keep you informed on major immigration happenings and the ongoing work done by CAPS to stabilize our population.

Recently the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case on President Obama’s plan to give not only legal status, but also work permits, to 4 million parents of so-called "dreamers." The administration’s plans are obviously qualitative policy changes, not a simple re-ordering of enforcement priorities. With a ruling due by the end of June, we hope for a victory in favor of immigration enforcement to send a strong, much needed signal to Washington. CAPS and the majority of Americans want less immigration, not more.

Here are a few key victories to celebrate from 2015:

  • President Obama’s unconstitutional executive actions were rejected twice in court.
  • 30 governors went on record saying they would not accept Syrian refugees due to faulty and potentially dangerous immigration screening.
  • Governors of North Carolina and Pennsylvania signed bills to end sanctuary jurisdictions in their states, and the San Francisco Sheriff who attempted to justify sanctuary policies lost his re-election bid.
  • Foreign-worker visa abuse by Disney, Southern California Edison and Toys“R”Us did not go unnoticed, with the scandals appearing in mainstream media as headline stories.

For another interesting CAPS blog, did you see Maria Fotopoulos' piece on Fighting the 5 Immigration Myths in 2016? Her talking points might help you combat common one-liners that obstruct reasonable immigration conversation.

Additionally, our campaign to end sanctuary jurisdictions has been stirring things up. Covering 25 states and Washington DC, CAPS sent blindfolds and pithy pamphlets to 238 sanctuary jurisdiction officials in an effort to shame them into ending this obviously harmful policy.

This campaign has prompted dialogue on cooperation with ICE and barriers to fully enforcing immigration law. Many sheriffs have called to clarify their positions, often resisting their jurisdictions being labeled sanctuaries. This response is surely a partial reaction to public outcry on the issue – keep it up! We don't want officials to cave-in to special interests who favor immigration anarchy.

In the upcoming months we anticipate sending action alerts on E-verify, refugee resettlement, birthright citizenship, and more. As always, we appreciate your time helping to get the messages out. Your efforts, in harmony with our other hundreds of thousands of action alert activists and Facebook fans, puts much needed pressure on our politicians.

With gratitude and determination,

Jo Wideman
