Post-Election Poll Shows Voter Opposition to Amnesty
“Congress-Free” Executive Amnesty Still Promised

Election Analysis – Voters slap down amnesty supporters. Oregon rejects licenses for illegals. Poll shows opposition to Obama amnesty plan.
Voter opposition to amnesty and massive immigration helped Republicans take control of the Senate and increase their majority in the House. The Washington Post headlined, “Immigration a losing issue for Dems in 2014 election.”
Republicans who opposed comprehensive amnesty ousted Democrats who voted for the Senate bill in key states such as Arkansas, North Carolina, and Colorado, and the issue brought Scott Brown from far behind in the polls to within a whisker of an upset in Massachusetts.
Concern over the economy, not immigration, was foremost on the mind of voters, but voters may now understand the link between the two. A recent study from the Center for Immigration Studies found that since 2000, all of the employment growth in the America has gone to immigrants, legal and illegal. CBS News analysis said, “Republicans are reaping most, if not all, of the voter unease about border security, immigration and wage competition.”
Poll shows opposition to executive amnesty
While President Obama has vowed to plow ahead with his executive amnesty plan, a post-election survey of voters shows that they reject his policy. The Polling Company found 74% of voters want Obama to work with Congress on immigration policy rather than “changing immigration policy on his own,” and 80% want new jobs created in the economy to go to American workers and legal immigrants already here rather than new immigrants.
The only direct election on immigration occurred in liberal Oregon where voters rejected driver’s licenses for illegal aliens by an astounding 68-32 percent. Grassroots activists placed Measure 88 on the ballot to overturn an act of the legislature, and they achieved their victory in spite of being vastly outspent. Moreover, their percentage of the vote exceeded that of any statewide candidate or initiative.
New challenges
In spite of the expressed wishes of the voters, immigration amnesty supporters from both parties plan to move ahead. Immigration enthusiasts are increasing their call for President Obama to issue an executive order for a massive amnesty.
Sen. Jeff Flake, R-AZ, one of the Gang of Eight, said the Republican Senate could work with the Republican House to pass a new immigration amnesty bill. Even Mitt Romney said comprehensive immigration reform will be the top priority for the Senate. Business interests see a victory for the GOP “establishment” wing that will serve their interests with more foreign labor.
Some open-border advocates offered a revisionist theory—Obama’s delay in the executive amnesty suppressed Latino turnout and led to the Democratic losses.
