Ad Urges San Diego City Council To Consider Population Stabilization As Part Of Water Solution

Population Projected To Grow By One Million In Thirty Years, Primarily Driven By Immigration

San Diego, CA – September 28, 2010
– Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS) has launched radio commercials in San Diego asking why City Councils throughout the county are not pursuing population stabilization measures in light of the ongoing water crisis. The campaign will run throughout the San Diego media market for several weeks.

Over the last thirty years, population has grown by one million in San Diego and population levels are projected to grow by another million in the next thirty years. Now that water is being diverted upstream, San Diego simply doesn’t have enough water for its population, much less for another million people.

Many San Diego residents are frustrated, like environmentalist and CAPS board member Stuart Hurlbert. He’s seen his grass turn brown and his water bills triple. Most frustrating is his contention that San Diego city councils are not including population stabilization in the overall water solution. Hurlbert commented, “San Diego leaders keep talking about ways to tap more water, but they don’t talk about ways to stabilize demand for the water. We must stabilize population or water demand will continue to outpace any supply solution we develop.”

In order to stabilize San Diego population, Hurlbert says mass immigration to California must be addressed. “Ninety seven percent of California’s population growth is due to immigration and births to immigrants. If we want to stabilize our population we must address the primary source of population growth. And that’s immigration.”

Hurlbert went on to voice concerns that many San Diego city council members don’t have the political courage to take on such a controversial issue but suggests if handled properly and with compassion, the issue could be a winner for politicians. Hurlbert’s suggestions for compassionately addressing immigration driven population growth can be viewed at CAPSweb.org.
