SANTA BARBARA – October 12, 2005

Governor Schwarzenegger’s veto of SB 60, another effort to provide driver’s licenses to illegal aliens, drew praise from a group concerned about the effects of population growth on California.

“The legislature has demonstrated great disdain for the desires of Californians,” said Diana Hull, Ph.D., President of Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS). “Every survey shows that voters are overwhelmingly opposed to this idea.”

Former Governor Davis signed legislation that allowed illegal aliens to obtain California licenses in 2003. A poll after the recall election showed voters opposed by 68 to 21 percent. Thirty percent said Davis’s approval of the bill influenced them to support his recall.

“We are now, for the first time in our history, receiving more illegal immigrants than legal ones,” stated Hull. “This truly shows that our immigration system is out of control.”

“For the government of California to provide driver’s licenses to those whose presence here is illegal and whose labor here is illegal, defies all common sense. It encourages illegal immigration, just as unscrupulous employers who hire illegal aliens encourage illegal immigration,” said Hull.

California ’s population has grown by over a half million annually for six years in a row to its current 37 million. Its annual growth rate of 1.5 percent exceeds that of many developing countries, but California’s growth is due almost entirely to foreign immigration.
