A new study by a California group says the number of illegal aliens in the U.S. could be more than triple what the federal government says.

Californians for Population Stabilization has released a study claiming 20 million to 38 million illegal immigrants reside in America, much more than the 12 million the federal government has claimed.

"Immigration is in a state of anarchy," organization member James Walsh, a former Immigration and Naturalization Service lawyer, told attendees at the National Press Club last week. "Not chaos, anarchy."

Other officials with the group say the federal government’s count is not necessarily intentionally low but probably the result of mistrust among Latinos – the largest ethnic group of illegal residents in the U.S.

"We have a very large group of people who don’t have the same feeling about responding to legitimate questions from their government," Diana Hull, president of Californians for Population Stabilization, told the Houston Chronicle.

She said large numbers of immigrants living in a single house may not tell federal Census takers how many are actually there.

Immigration stands to become a major issue in next year’s presidential elections. Most Americans – Democrats, Republicans and Independents – have said they favor a crack-down on illegal immigration with tougher border protection and stricter enforcement of existing anti-illegal immigration laws.
