Ecological footprint consequences attributed to endless population growth

Published on May 20th, 2013

The Gang of Eight U.S. senators and Judiciary Committe members huddle in Washington, DC to mediate the fate of 11 million illegal alien migrants now living and working in America. Not only would S.744 legalize most of the 11 million, immigration and demographic experts predict that the bill would add 33 million new immigrants to the United States within a single decade. With our own built in population momentum , the number of people added to the United States by 2023 could exceed 43 million persons. With birth rates and chain migration, the figure might approach 50 million.

Unbeknownst to most Americans, the Gang and its allies want to increase legal immigration from one million annually to 1.5 million each year under the terms outlined in S.744. Such numbers ignore concerns about water, environment, energy or resources. Those added 33 million people in one decade would create an enormous burden on our dwindling wilderness.

The least discussed aspect of population growth is a little known concept: ecological footprint. It means the amount of wilderness land that must be destroyed in order to support added individuals with food, energy, resources and shelter.

In primitive societies such as Ethiopia, a single individual’s ecological footprint averaged .4 acres. Additionally, earlier societies didn't drive cars or spew exhaust chemicals into the land, air and water. But in today's United States, every added person destroys 25.4 acres of land according to www.allspecies.org in order to sustain that individual.

Thousands of acres must be destroyed for housing tracts, malls, schools, roads, airports, swimming pools, football stadiums, recreation areas, acreage for food to be grown and energy for warming and transporting that individual.

If we add 40 million more people through immigration and domestic population monentum, then 40 million multiplied by 25.4 acres equals 1.016 billion acres that must be paved over. The figures overwhelm anyone who understands simple math. For anyone to cares about our environment, such destruction of arable land equates to less and less animal habitat for all wild creatures.

According to the U.S. Department of Interior, in 2013, 250 North American animals living in the 48 contiguous states face extinction.  That equals 2,500 creatures every decade. If S.744 passes, the number of extinctions would rises commensurately with the amount of human population growth that accelerates the ecological footprint.

Also not mentioned: cascading extinctions. For example, over 90 percent of the West’s prairie dog colonies suffered extermination in the past 50 years because of human encroachment. A minimum of 67 other predators survive in the wilds because of the abundance of those furry little rodents. By killing off their habitat, humans assure the extinction rates of those 67 other creatures, which include hawks, eagles, crows, coyotes, foxes and dozens of other predators.

In the end, Americans must educate themselves to the colossal consequences of mass immigration and, specifically, S. 744's long term consequences as it related to population growth.

Please use the CAPS Action Alert Fax system here to help block S. 744 and to stop the destruction of wilderness habitat and animal extinctions.
