Habitat loss due to human population growth presents the single greatest problem facing native plants and animals in California

California is the most populous state in the nation, and the human population continues to rise. An increasing population increases demands on California’s resources such as land and water, which are also needed by California’s native plants and animals. Loss of habitat, including habitat fragmentation, is the most important factor that contributes to the decline of many native plant populations.
