Heat Wave to Affect Over 100 Million Americans

The United States is in the midst of a historic heat wave, with over 100 million Americans potentially facing extreme heat. Unfortunately, as temperatures sore, decades of rising population levels have put an unsustainable demand on water resources and our energy grid.

According to a report in CNN:

“A dangerous heat wave that has wilted the south-central US spread across the country Wednesday, with about 110 million people under heat alerts in more than two dozen states from California to New England – and many areas recording high temperatures in the 90s or triple digits.”

That’s roughly a third of the country enduring these sweltering conditions.

Even Europeans are feeling the heat.

A BBC writeup chronicles the record setting temperatures and wildfires that occurred this past week in Europe where air conditioning is not a common luxury.

California is also experiencing the heat, but a report in Axios indicates the worst may be yet to come.

“The intrigue: Computer model projections show the heat in the U.S. is likely to migrate westward over time, with the potential for a significant heat wave to envelop much of the West, including California, Oregon and Washington, toward the end of July and into August.”

Their report mentioned that this extreme heat also increases the risk of wildfire.

“This carries considerable risks, since the ongoing severe drought has turned the region’s forests into a tinderbox, and many areas are limiting water use in the midst of a multi-year megadrought.”

We blogged about the potentially deadly heat and climate conditions that Californians faced this summer at the beginning of May.

Now a significant portion of the American public and people across the world are in the same boat.

Most of these publications will discuss how fossil fuel and energy consumption have led to climate conditions such as this.

None of them will point out how human overpopulation and unsustainable population growth have contributed to this climate crisis.

Until that issue is taken seriously, we won’t be able to beat the heat and horrific climate disasters that accompany it.
